The large-caliber small arms and first of all large-caliber machine guns have appeared on battle fields of the First World War. It became the answer to a wide extent of armoured vehicles and first tanks appearance. Development of aviation and is application for ground targets defeat has demanded, in turn, creation of weapon for it. For this reason, an air defence of ground forces and navy arisen a! that time has been partially assigned to large-caliber machine guns also. In 1930-40 large-caliber machine guns have found wide application in aviation.

In the USSR large-caliber cartridge designing has been begun at 1927. The first domestic large-caliber cartridge has been created at the Tula cartridge factory and accepted on arms at 1930. It has received the name 12.7 mm cartridge with armour piercing bullet 1930 model B-30. Subsequently new kinds of cartridges with armour piercing incendiary, armour piercing incendiary tracing, incendiary, ranging and other types of bullets have been created for expansion of large-caliber machine guns opportunities. Their development was conducted originally at Tula and then Ulyanovsk cartridge Works, a plant №46 and OKB-44 (both enterprises settled down in Kuntcevo, Moscow) and TSNIITOCHMASH.

At present some types of 12.7 mm cartridges (12.7×108) which are used for shooting from large-caliber machine guns DSHKM, NSB-12.7 «Utes» (NSVI and NSVS), «CORD», YAkB-12.7 and large-caliber sniper rifles ASBK «CORD» and OSV-96 are on arms.
Manufacture of 12.7mm cartridges is adjusted on Novosibirsk and Ulyanovsk cartridge Works. All types of 12.7mm cartridges are made with a brass cartridge case.

Cartridge 12.7 BZT-44 has been developed at ОКБ-44 and accepted on arms at 1943 Instead of a cartridge with armour piercing incendiary bullet BZT its manufacturability has been improved and burning brightness and tracing range are increased.

Modernization of the cartridge 12.7 BZT-44 was spent at the beginning of 1990s at TSNIITOCHMASH. The new cartridge has been accepted on arms at 2002 and has received name 12.7mm cartridge with advanced armour piercing incendiary tracing bullet BZT-44M. Tracer ignition of advanced bullet occurs at distance up to 50-120m from muzzle. It complicates detection of a gun position by the enemy, not blinded the rifleman and reduces a night sights flash.

Cartridges 12.7 BZT-44 and 12.7 BZT-44M are intended for defeat of low-flying air targets, tight armouring technical equipment, vehicles and group military personnel and also for fire correction and target designation. These cartridges can be used for fires creation.

Cartridges 12.7 BZT-44 and 12.7 BZT-44M are usually applied for shooting from antiaircraft machine guns together with cartridge B-32.
Bullets of cartridges 12.7 BZT-44 and 12.7 BZT-44M provide breakdown of armour plate thickness 15 mm at range up to 100 m and fuel ignition behind armour.

The bullet peaked core is made from heat-strengthened tool steel. The incendiary composition is located in a bullet head part before the core. Tracer is pressed in little cartridge and also is located behind the core.

Cartridge with armour piercing incendsary bullet BS (BS — armour piercing core) has been developed at TSNIITOCHMASH and accepted on arms at 1974. It is intended for defeat of light armouring targets, military personnel and firing means which are being behind light shelters and also low-flying targets.

Bullet BS has considerably the best armour breakdown action than bullet B-32. It is capable to punch out 20 mm armour less than 20 degrees corner from a normal at distance up to 750 m. Such armour breakdown level allows successfully hitting targets such as armoured personnel carrier APC M-113 type at distance up to 700-800 m.

The increased breakdown action of this bullet is provided due to ceramic-metal core usage. For incendiary action of a bullet increase the pyrotechnic incendiary composition is located not only in a buffet head part before the core but also in special little cartridge after it.

Double bullet cartridges 12.7 1SL and 12.7 1SLT (tracer) have been developed at TSNHTOCHMASH and accepted for Air Forces supply at 1985. Such cartridges and corresponding weapon creation has been caused by necessity of substantial increase of machine gun fare density on the ground targets from combat helicopters with the aim to increase target defeat probability.

These cartridges are applied to shooting from aviation quadruple machine guns YAkB-12.7 installed on combat helicopters Mi-24D and intended for defeat of military personnel ground unarmoursng technical equipment and fire weapon. 12.7 1SLT cartridge with tracer bullet is used in common with 12.7 1SL cartridge and provides fire correction and target designation apart from listed targets defeat.

Both bullets of 12.7 1SL cartridges are armour piercing incendiary with steel core. A front bullet of 12.7 1SLT cartridge is the same as 12.7 1SL cartridge but a back bullet is incendiary tracing. A back bullet tip enters into flute of front bullet tail part when packaged. Fastening of the second bullet in a cartridge case is carried out by punching cartridge case i three places.

12.7 1SL bullets have not painting.
